REFLECTION:
When was the last time you were moved with pity when you saw a suffering person?
How did you express your concern for that poor suffering person? Indifference to others’
suffering isolates us while compassion connects us to them. Compassion moved Jesus to stretch out his hand to touch the leper.
During that time, a bell was tied on the ankles of lepers to signal their coming, so that people can avoid them.
Leprosy was a contagious disease and there was no cure then. Lepers were like walking dead people,
they were ostracized in society. Jesus’ act of touching the leper challenges me to question my values:
my well-being first or those of the suffering person? If I claim to be Jesus’ disciple,
this is the moment to witness that I am indeed Jesus’ disciple in word and deed.
