And he said to the man,
“Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was healed. As soon as the Pharisees left, they met with Herod’s supporters,
looking for a way to destroy Jesus.
REFLECTION:
Which is more important: a person’s well-being or observance of man-made laws? What is the purpose of laws? Canon 1752 says,
“The supreme law of the Church is the salvation of souls.” But many people today hide behind human laws to justify their secular values.
Some lawmakers even approve laws which are contrary to the divine law, e.g., laws allowing divorce, abortion, and euthanasia.
They claim that these laws preserve humanity from over-population and economic crisis. They miss to see that life is a divine gift,
which God alone has the right to give and take away. Authentic laws promote the well-being of the people, not enslave them.
Jesus emphatically demonstrates the meaning of the Sabbath by restoring the health of a man with a paralyzed hand.
Sabbath is meant to save and promote life, not destroy it.
