I will show you what the one is like, who comes to me, and listens to my words, and acts accordingly. That person is like the builder who dug deep,
and laid the foundations of his house on rock. The river overflowed, and the stream dashed against the house,
but could not carry it off because the house had been well built. But the one who listens and does not act,
is like a man who built his house on the ground without a foundation. The flood burst against it,
and the house fell at once: and what a terrible disaster that was!”
REFLECTION:
Parents complain about children getting wayward despite giving daily advise and discipline. They wonder where they have gone wrong.
It is difficult to admit lapse of parental responsibility and guidance when one has said and done a lot.
Having a good foundation for children growing up does not mean having regularly lectured or disciplined.
It is about how the lecture and discipline are lived out first by parents.
It is more of an atmosphere of love and companionship. A child needs a companion in his or her struggles rather than a judge or punisher.
If that companion is not at home, it will be sought elsewhere. A good foundation is the availability of care and relationship at home.
One does not have to look for it elsewhere. It is something a child can easily go home to when he or she finds no comfort somewhere.
