Fortunate are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied. Fortunate are the merciful, for they shall
find mercy. Fortunate are those with pure hearts, for they shall see God. Fortunate are those who work for peace,
they shall be called children of God. Fortunate are those who are persecuted for the cause of justice, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. Fortunate are you, when people insult you and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil against you because
you are my followers. Be glad and joyful, for a great reward is kept for you in God. For that is how this people persecuted the prophets
who lived before you.
Reflection:
The Sermon on the Mount is rather strange with a mix of
contrast that might alert us to the real import of the Beatitudes.
First Jesus went up to the mountain. Then He is teaching His
disciples and the people who are listening that the way to
greatness is to go down, to humble oneself, and not to lose
hope amidst persecution. Those who cling on to His teachings
are not weak. They are strong to the point that violence has no
power over them. Their blessedness is not on having an easy
comfortable life, but the chance to give witness to the power of love
amidst the viciousness surrounding them.
