Father has put his mark.” Then the Jews asked him, “What shall we do? What are the works that God wants us to do?” And Jesus answered them, “The work God wants is this: that you believe in the One whom God has sent.”
Reflections
THE WORK GOD WANTS IS THIS: THAT YOU BELIEVE IN THE ONE WHOM GOD HAS SENT.
It is clear that our religion is about a PERSON, not about creeds and works although these would be the consequences of one’s faith in the person of Jesus Christ. I always have to remember that our faith all began with an ENCOUNTER! It was the PERSON of Jesus that drew His apostles to Him so that even when they met Him for the first time, they left everything to follow someone they don’t really know. And the apostles and disciples preached not about any doctrine but about the PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST. And the martyrs, not only of the early Church but throughout the ages, died not for any doctrine or institution but for their loyalty to a PERSON. I think it is very important to always have this in mind because in the institutionalization of religion, there is the danger of forgetting that it is not the doctrines, moral laws, rituals, theologies, etc. that are central to one’s faith. IT IS THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST.
