BRIEF HISTORY
During its 26-31 January 1959 meeting, the Catholic Hierarchy of the Philippines approved a resolution made by the late Archbishop of Manila, later Cardinal Rufino J. Santos, calling for the establishment of the Pontifical Philippine College.
Blessed Pope John XXIII instituted the Collegium Clericorum Philippinorum in Urbe through his Apostolic Letter Sancta Mater Ecclesia, endowing it with the title Pontificium. Notwithstanding the heavy rain, Blessed John XXIII inaugurated the PCF on 7 October 1961, declaring “acquæ multæ non potuerunt exstinguere caritatem” (Song of Songs 8:7).
As of 1 January 2006, the PCF has had 584 alumni, 50 of whom have been ordained bishops.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE
The Pontificio Collegio Filippino is the home in Rome of Filipino diocesan priests who have been sent by their bishops to pursue advanced ecclesiastical studies sub umbra Petri. It is thus a community providing a special type of ongoing priestly formation that is characterized by the cultural diversity and proximity to the Pope that only Rome can provide.

COMPOSITION AND PROGRAM
For the school year 2007-2008, Collegio Filippino has a population of thirty priests (twenty-seven are student-priests; three members of Administration, four sisters of the Religiosas Misioneras de Santo Domingo and four lay personnel.
The PCF Program has four aspects: building a unique family of priests, religious and laity based on participation and co-responsibility; providing an atmosphere conducive to intense intellectual endeavor; ongoing spiritual formation; and continuing ministry, usually to Filipino migrants in and outside Rome. This communitarian, academic, spiritual and apostolic program intends to prepare the priests for specialized ministry in the Philippines.
The priests study in the different pontifical universities, institutes and academies, chief of which are the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, the Pontifical Lateran University, the Pontifical Biblical Institute, the Pontifical Liturgical Institute (Anselmnianum) and the Higher Institute of Moral Theology (Alphonsianum). They specialize in Sacred Scriptures, Sacred Liturgy, Sacred Theology (fundamental, biblical, dogmatic, moral, spiritual, pastoral), Church History, Canon Law, Philosophy, Social Communications, etc.
The PCF gets its subsidy from the board and lodging fees of the residents and from donations of guests (bishops, priests and friends). The principal benefactors, however, are Cardinal Ricardo J. Vidal of Cebu and Cardinal Gaudencio B. Rosales of Manila.
