Suffragan of Manila

 

Established as a new Diocese on December 7, 2002, the Diocese of Parañaque comprises the Cities of Parañaque, Las Piñas and Muntinlupa, which formerly belonged to the Archdiocese of Manila. Titular: St. Andrew, the Apostle.

The Cathedral of St. Andrew in La Huerta, Parañaque City, which is considered the oldest Church in the area, is the Seat of the Diocese of Parañaque. There are forty-seven (47) Parishes, one (1) National Shrine, one (1) Chaplaincy and one (1) Quasi-Parish clustered in six vicariates: three in Parañaque, two in Las Piñas and one in Muntinlupa.

Bishop Mercado was born on June 6, 1951 in Sta. Cruz, Manila. He was ordained to the Priesthood on March 19, 1977. He was Parochial Vicar of San Isidro Parish in Pasay (1977); Spiritual Director of San Pablo Regional Seminary in Baguio City (1977-79); Director of the Pre-College Department of San Carlos Seminary in Makati City (1979-81) and Professor and Assistant Spiritual Director (1985-88). He served as Rector at the Holy Apostles Senior Seminary in Makati City (1988-94) and Secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Seminaries under Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, DD (1988- 94); Rector of the Pontificio Collegio Filipino in Rome (1994-97).

Bishop Mercado was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Manila on February 25, 1997 and was ordained Bishop on March 31, 1997 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Manila. He was appointed as the first bishop of the Diocese of Parañaque on December 7, 2002. His formal installation as the First Bishop of Parañaque was on January 28, 2003. The motto in the bishop’s coat of arms, Confirma Fratres Tuos (Strengthen your brethren), is taken from Luke 22:32.
