Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of
Solomon; and here, there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times
and accuse them, for Jonah’s preaching made them turn from their sins, and here, there is greater than Jonah.
REFLECTION:
God is a God of compassion. S/He is the God whom Jonah preached and Jesus revealed to us. In the midst of sinfulness,
the compassion of God is much greater than His/Her condemnation. God is ever open to forgive us. In our Gospel for today,
Jesus reminds us to be like the people of Nineveh who turned away from their sins and obtained God’s forgiveness. He calls us to repent and mend our ways.
Repentance is a metanoia, a change of direction, a process of changing ones heart. True repentance requires
a change of one’s heart towards God. This must be expressed in altering one’s attitude in his/her relationships
with another person and with God. It demands reconciliation. The many sufferings of the world today are caused
by our inability to listen to the Word of God and follow Him in humility. Instead, we focus so much attention to power and pride.
True repentance is having a humble and contrite heart in the presence of God as the people of Nineveh did.
