On hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. He turned and saw them following,
and he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They answered, “Rabbi (which means
Master), where are you staying?” Jesus said, “Come and see.”
So they went and saw where he stayed, and spent the rest of that day with him. It was
about four o’clock in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the
two who heard what John had said, and followed Jesus. Early the next morning, he
found his brother Simon and said to him,“We have found the Messiah” (which means
the Christ), and he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are
Simon, son of John, but you shall be called “Cephas”
(which means Rock).
Reflect.
The apostle Andrew is mentioned by name only three times in John’s Gospel. Today’s
reading isone of those three. Andrew brings his brother Simon to Jesus. In the other two
instances, Andrew does the same thing: he brings people to Jesus. He brings the boy
who has two loaves and five fish to Jesus and, along with Philip, he brings some Greeks
to meet Jesus. Andrew is a great model for us all. We too are called to bring people to
Jesus, to help them come to know him. This is how people know that we are children
of God: if we respond in love to those in need and help those we meet come to Jesus.
But to help others come to know Jesus, we have to know him ourselves. Time
spent in prayer, especially before the Blessed Sacrament, helps us grow in our
relationship with Jesus and learn to love him more deeply. The more closely we follow
Jesus in love, the more we will draw others to him.
