to believe will be condemned. Signs like these will accompany those who have believed: in my
name they will cast out demons and speak new languages; they will pick up snakes, and if they
drink anything poisonous, they will be unharmed; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they
will be healed.” So then, after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven
and took his place at the right hand of God. The Eleven went forth and preached everywhere,
while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.

Today’s readings offer a summary of the qualities necessary for living a faithful Christian life.
A faithful disciple will show respect for authority, living with humility rather than calling attention
to themselves. They will trust their lives with all their concerns to the Lord, relying on him to
grant them comfort and peace. Disciples will persevere in faith despite trials, secure in their hope,
founded in God’s promise of eternal glory. Finally, they will proclaim the Good News to all they
meet, witnessing to the goodness and grace of God in word and deed.
God has called us to live as missionary disciples from the first days of the Church. Having
been redeemed by the saving death of the Lord Jesus, how can we do anything but
share that most precious gift with the people we love? The joy, hope, and grace that surround
us compel us to go out and proclaim the good news of salvation, secure in the knowledge that
God will keep us safe, support us in time of trial, and allow our efforts to bear fruit.
