joy may be full.
I have taught you all these things in veiled language, but the time is coming when I shall
no longer speak in veiled language, but will speak to you plainly about the Father.
When that day comes, you will ask in my name; and it will not be necessary for me to
ask the Father for you, for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and
you believed that I came from the Father. As I came from the Father, and have come into
the world, so I am leaving the world, and going to the Father.”
Reflect
There is an old saying that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. The point of this saying
is to caution people against making broad pronouncements with only partial knowledge. If
we understand only part of a problem, our proposed solution may make things worse, not
better. We are blessed that Jesus gave us his Holy Spirit so that we might have true
knowledge of all that the Father has revealed.
But how do we know what is true and avoid using our knowledge in a dangerous
way? First, we should rely on authentic teachers. As Apollos listened to and learned
from Priscilla and Aquila, we can learn from those the Church has given us as
teachers. Second, we can ask the Father to help us discern the truth in the Spirit.
He will grant that request because he loves us. Finally, we should remember that
the truth is never a weapon. Truth should always be shared in love and compassion,
seeking the good of the other. It requires knowing the other, accompanying them in
loving service, and witnessing to the truth through our lives.
