earth last, not the smallest letter or dot in the Law will change until all is fulfilled. So then,
whoever breaks the least important of these commandments, and teaches others to do
the same, will be the least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys them,
and teaches others to do the same, will be great in the kingdom of heaven.
Reflect
Today’s readings seem to be at war with each other. Paul argues that the written law brings
death, while Jesus makes it clear that he has not come to annul or change the written law.
How do we reconcile these different views?
Perhaps the answer lies in understanding what the law truly is. The law is not a prison, meant
to keep us from doing what we want. It is not a trap to catch and punish us. Instead, the law is
a system of guard rails that help to keep us out of danger and on the right path. But the law
can become a problem when we focus more on the guardrails than we do on the destination.
Our ultimate destination is the kingdom of heaven, where we will live with God forever.
The Spirit, dwelling in our hearts, teaches us to long for the things of heaven and guides us
there, keeping us always on the path of life.
