no moth or rust can destroy it, nor thief come and steal it.
For where your treasures is, there also will your heart be.
The lamp of the body is the eye; if your eyes are sound, your whole body will be full of light.
If your eyes are diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is
darkness, how great is that darkness!
Reflect
What really matters? In a way, that’s a question that both of our readings today address. Paul
recounts his ancestry and the persecutions he has faced for the Gospel. But then he stuns
his readers, saying that these things don’t matter. Instead, he boasts of his weakness and
vulnerability because they increase his reliance on God. In the Gospel, Jesus cautions
his listeners against believing that wealth and possessions are what matter. Instead, living a
life that will bring us to eternity with God in heaven is what is truly important.
We spend our days rushing from one task to another, writing endless todo lists and creating
charts of priorities. But how many things on those lists and charts truly matter? How many
will bring us close to God? We spend our precious time doing things that seem urgent but are,
in fact, unimportant. May God help us to discern what is of true value and give us the grace to
expend our time and energy on those things.
