Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, and not see the plank in your own eye?
How can you say to your brother, ‘Come, let me take the speck from your eye,’ as long as
that plank is in your own? Hypocrite, remove the plank out of your own eye, then you will
see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Reflect
The story of Abraham calls our attention to the experience of migrants. Abraham left his ancestral
homeland and most of his family because God called him to travel to a new land. Present-day
migrants leave their homelands for many reasons. They may be fleeing war or gang violence that
puts their family at risk. They may be fleeing crushing poverty in the hope of finding a way to live
in dignity. They may be fleeing environmental damage that has destroyed land farmed for centuries.
Some people will migrate internally, usually going to other cities in their own countries. Others will
travel to new countries, facing danger and even death to begin rebuilding their lives in a new place,
hoping to find a new home.
In the name of Abraham or father in faith, we are called to provide welcome and assistance to those
seeking safety and opportunity. Even more, we can speak on their behalf with community leaders
and politicians to ensure that migrants will be welcomed and supported and that the international
community will work to improve conditions in their homelands so that migration will not be a matter
of necessity, but of choice and call.
