Some of the Pharisees asked them, “Why do you do what is forbidden on the Sabbath?”
Then Jesus spoke, “Have you never read what David did when he and his men were
hungry?” He entered the house of God, took and ate the bread of the offering and even
gave some to his men, though only priests are allowed to eat that bread.” And Jesus added,
“The Son of Man is Lord and rules over the Sabbath.”
Reflect
Unfortunately , estrangement is a part of human relationships. Friends grow apart. Families
face division: between spouses, between siblings, and within more extended family. These
estrangements happen for many reasons. We may fail to seek or offer forgiveness. We
may bear grudges. We may simply stop spending time together, failing to nurture the
relationship.
We can even become estranged from God. In that case, the estrangement is always on our
side because God never waivers in His love for us. But we can move away from God by
failing to spend time on this relationship, skipping Mass and forgetting to pray. We may
think that God cannot forgive our sins. We may carry anger toward God for prayers that seem
to remain unanswered.
But as Paul reminds us, God bridges all estrangement through Jesus, who ended all division
by His saving death, reconciling us with God so that we can live in the holiness and hope to
which we have been called.
