me?” And Jesus said to him, “Before Philip called you, you were under the fig tree and I saw
you.”
Nathanael answered, “Master, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” But
Jesus replied, “You believe because I said: ‘I saw you under the fig tree.’ But you will see
greater things than that. Truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels
of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
Reflect
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Like all
angels, the archangels are servants of God, coming into the world to bring God’s word and
help to people. Each of these archangels is mentioned in Scripture and each has a specific
mission which can teach us about what God desires from us.
Michael is portrayed as a warrior, the general of God’s forces in the battle between good and
evil. Gabriel is the messenger who brings the good news of the births of John the Baptist and
Jesus to Zechariah and Mary. Raphael accompanied Tobiah on his journey, freed Sarah from
the demon who tormented her, and cured Tobit of his blindness.
These angels serve as examples to us. They show us what we should strive to do. Like
Michael, we should oppose the forces of evil and strive to bring God’s kingdom of justice
and peace. Like Gabriel, we should be evangelists, sharing the good news with all we
meet. Like Raphael, we should trive to bring healing and hope to a world that needs both
desperately.
